HOW TO WATERPROOF AND INSULATE A ROOF

I often find myself with clients who ask me how best to waterproof their roof, and today with this article I would like to help as many users as possible understand this question.

Before proceeding with the explanations, it is clear that the intervention of a technician or contracted company to check the condition of the roof and assess exactly the condition of the substrate is almost always necessary.

The first and most important thing to do is to check for seepage.

They may be minimal enough to allow superficial or limited remedial work, but they may also be such that complete re-roofing of the entire roof is necessarily necessary.

Another important check to avoid problems is that of areas of water stagnation, but if there is precisely a technician, rather than an experienced team, they will point this out to you.

In any case, there will come a time when a choice will be made about how to finish waterproofing our roof, and that is where we come in.

First of all, let’s dispel the myth of bituminous sheathing or the like, which need ti long application times and more invasive work, compared to the solutions that I will give you getting excellent results.

In fact, when you use bituminous sheathing, you must also consider that it alone cannot stand and therefore once applied to the substrate, it needs to be protected.

This implies that it needs to be covered with paving or gravel or whatever.

My solutions are 2 and the major differences in choosing the product to apply to waterproof the roof, lies in understanding what needs we have to meet.

Let’s choose which of the 2 statements best suits our need to understand what we need:

  1. I need to get great waterproofing and if it also reduces my energy consumption so much the better.
  2. I need waterproofing that will protect me from the wear and tear of trampling, because I also use my roof for dancing nights!!! (maybe I have exaggerated here, but it is to give an idea of the very high wear resistance the substrate must be subjected to)

Based on what our response is, we can choose the right product for us.

Well have you chosen?

Perfect!!! Keep in mind because now we start with the common preparation technique.

Yes!!! Whether your choice is A or whether it is B, the preparation is identical.

In fact, to achieve an excellent waterproofing of our roof, the preparation of the substrate is essential, which in this case is the same for both requirements.

It remains clear and obvious that without proper preparation of the substrate, the results will not be obtained, which is why we always recommend that professional applicators be consulted and that DIY be avoided in this specific case.

HOW TO PREPARE IN SUPPOSITION OF A ROOF TO BE WATERPROOFED AND INSULATED

There are 3 simple application steps + 1 optional step

First, a very good job of cleaning the substrate must be done, so remove with a brush any efflorescence, flaking parts of old paint, and remove all dust present.

Phase 1

In this phase the application of the 1st primer is performed.

  1. If we are dealing with an absorbent substrate, such as cement, concrete, etc. etc., we will use R25 primer
  2. If we are dealing with an absorbent substrate, such as coriglian chianche, we will use the primer H95 IMPRIMITATION
  3. If we are on a substrate with old sheathing, bituminous sheathing, slated sheathing already applied, we will use the specific primer BITUMPRIMER

Step 2

I lay down the MAT-di-VETRO that will make the substrate’s waterproofing much more durable and high-performance, and at this point we can apply the second primer and specifically R25, which will have the function of both making the final finishing product HASTEN and further INCREASE the adhesion qualities of the MAT-di-VETRO

Step 3.

Application of the specific product.

At this point, all we have to do is to choose the right product to use according to our needs to be met and apply 2 finishing coats of it.

Optional step

For any uneven surfaces, a coat of ResinElastic PR cementitious sheathing can be used before the 2 coats of the finished product.

solution A

Do we want to waterproof and save on our energy consumption? EcomirrorTetti is a unique product of its kind, because it is EcoThermoReflective and will allow you to reduce your consumption, as well as having excellent resistance to normal foot traffic.

Solution B

Do we want to have parties, parties, dances, or any type of activity that leads to high footfall on our roof?? in this situation we should use ResinGuaina, which is a product with very high resistance to wear. (excellent product also used to insulate asbestos with appropriate certifications – for info contact us on 0804912873)

WHY WATERPROOF A ROOF THAT IS CURRENTLY IN GOOD CONDITION AND WITHOUT INFILTRATION?

In this paragraph I want to give you some dispassionate advice to allow you to save a lot of money in the future.

One of the major causes of roof degradation is the absolute lack of roof maintenance.

You get to decades of complete lack of maintenance, only to find yourself with the hot potato in your hand.

You get to decades of complete lack of maintenance, only to find yourself with the hot potato in your hand.

Using waterproofing products with a low economic impact when the surface is still in good condition prevents what tomorrow could turn into an invasive job with a high/very high economic impact in the near future.

You say this because you want to sell me your products??

Absolutely not!!!

You are free to choose my competitor companies or choose me, that's not a problem; this is just an advice that I give you from experience.
I supply retailers, installers and construction companies on a daily basis, and I know that it means having to redo an entire roof surface due to infiltrations that could have been avoided a few years earlier, with very quick works.
If you then decide that I, as Resina Color, must be your product supplier, I can only be pleased, and in this case I will recommend EcomirroTetti, if you want to waterproof and also save some money on your energy consumption, or ResinGuaina if you need a surface capable of excellent resistance to wear from foot traffic.

In any case, 2 unique products of their kind.
